The Ladies Football squad before the Feile.

Ladies Football Feile 2012

Naomh Mearnog

21/04/2012

Saturday morning saw the young ladies cross the M50 to Naomh Mearnog to compete in the Dublin football feile. With a mixed group of ages four u-14, twelve u-13, six u-12 and two u-11 it was hard to judge how we would get on. We were drawn to face Beann Eadair and Westmanstown in the group stages, both of whom are doing well in their respective leagues. They played each other in the first group match with Westmanstown emerging winners. This meant that if we could beat Beann Eadair in our first match we would make the semi-finals.

Naomh Peregrine v Beann Eadair 11.50

Having lost the toss we had to play into a very strong wind in the first half. Beann Eadair came out really strong; as they knew if they lost that would be their day over.  In what was a really close first half we found ourselves down a point at half-time which could have been a lot worse had our keeper, backs and half backs not played so well. With the restart the girls battled for everything and quickly scored a goal, which settled them down and from that point on looked comfortable and finished up winning.

Nh Peregrine 2-4 Beann Eadair 0-3

Naomh Peregrine v Westmanstown 13.25

With a little over 30 min break we were to play local rivals Westmanstown to decide who was to top the group. Having won the toss we decided to play with the wind. Despite having many chances in the first half we found ourselves down by a point again at halftime. With the local rivalry being a hot topic at halftime our girls came out in the second half and played some of the best football I have seen from them, the winning goal could only be called spectacular. Every single player on the pitch gave 100% and in the end, despite shooting into the wind we came out winners.

Nh Peregrine 2-4 Westmanstown0-8

Naomh Peregrine v Na Fianna B 16.00

Having topped our group we had to wait 1½ hours to play Na Fianna in the semi final. Having played our 2 previous games on pitch 5 we got moved to pitch 6 for the semi. This was wider, slightly shorter but with much bigger goals. After a good warm up to get the girls going it was into the wind we found ourselves playing again in the first half. We just never got started and Na Fianna were first to every ball and we struggled to keep up with them all over the pitch. With the help of the wind they scored 4 goals and 2 points in the first half and we had managed only 2 wides. Even with the wind in the second half we were struggling to get past their half back line. We created some good chances but failed to convert them. We managed to hold them to 2 points in the second half and scored 2 ourselves. Losing out in the end to a better team. Talking to their mentor after he told me all of their girls on the team were u-14 and he was really surprised at the ages of our girls. He had seen us beat Westmanstown and thought we were excellent and was really surprised the lead they had taken in the first half.

Nh Peregrine 0-2 Na Fianna 4-4

It was a fantastic day out for all 24 of our girls and our mascot. They played really well and did themselves and the club proud. In the first 2 games I don't think I have ever seen them play any better. Unfortunately we never got started in the semi-final. Most of the girls have next year to look forward to and some have more than that. In what I thought was a lovely end to the day, was when the kids shortly after losing the match thanked all the parents and gave us a round of applause. We should be really proud of our young daughters. Thanks to John, Gordon and all the other mentors who assisted us in the preparation for such a great day. Finally special thanks to all the parents, for turning up on the day and helping out in everyway.

Martha wins division 5 skills competition

U13 Football Division 4

Naomh Peregrine V St Annes

Oakview

21 April 2012.

This must count as one that got away as Naomh Peregrine battled southsiders St Annes last Saturday on the Oakview Pitch.  Great play by the Blakestown boys saw them two points up at halftime.  It was neck and neck  right up to the last kick of the game when a speculative dipping shot deceived Jack and went under the bar for a major score.  This meant that St Annes won but the boys and the mentors have to take heart from the battling performance.  Final Score

Naomh Peregrine 2-6 St Annes 2-9

U14 Football Div.4

St Peregrines V St Marys (S)

Hartstown Pitch

21st April 2012

St Peregrines 5-08 St Marys 0-07

Both teams made a nervous start to this U14 League encounter. St Peregrines knew they would not have it as easy as they did in their last game against Naomh Mearnog, and St Marys knew they were coming up against an in form St Peregrines. It was the 8th minute before the first score was registered when John Layton lobbed the St Marys goalkeeper who was too far off his line. This settled things for the Blakestown boys and Jarod Flynn and John again soon added a point each. It was the 16th minute before St Marys got off the mark. It was a close, tough, low scoring game and both teams were giving it their all. The St Peregrines backline were very strong and Marys were only able to add one more point before half time. St Peregrines for their part added two more points from Jarod again and a nicely taken effort from Andrew Keogh. Score at half time St Peregrines 1-04 St Marys 0-02

The first 15 minutes of the second half were very competitive. Both teams exchanged points and the game was very close and good to watch. St Marys then hit 2 points in quick succession to bring them to within 3 points. The St Peregrines mentors looked slightly worried as the game entered the last 10 minutes, but they need not have been. Jarod Flynn cracked home a goal to the top corner of the net, and then kicked over a great point after making a high catch that Ciaran Whelan would have been proud of. That took the wind out of St Marys sails and from then on St Peregrines won every kickout. They finished out the game with Cian Tuite scoring 1-01 and Jarod added another two goals to bring his tally for the day to 3-03. The final score did not truly reflect the whole game as up until the last 10 minutes St Marys were very strong and competitive. Both teams can now go into the feile on the 5th May with great confidence.

U15 Football

Naomh Peregrine V  St James Gaels

Hartstown

22 April 2012

The U15 Boys football fixture v James Gaels took place yesterday on Hartstown pitch in damp conditions. The first half was a very close affair with the home team shading things narrowly by 2 points at the break. Peregrines physical size and conditioning stood them in great stead as the second half wore on. Whilst the away team had some strong individual players particularly at number 7 and 9 Naomh Peregrine ran out comfortable winners 13- 11 to 2-04. A big shout out to the Girls Féile team who reached a semi-final with the entire team over a year underage. Well done to Greg and the girls , did us proud!!

U16 Camogie Div 3

Naomh Peregrine V Cuala

Meadowvale

21 April 2012

It was a top of the table clash between Naomh Peregrine and Cuala last Saturday.  Cuala had a large squad of 18 or 19 while we were struggling to make the necessary 13 with full back Niamh Hynes missing due to illness.  Peregrines played with a strong wind at their backs and took full advantage to press Cuala back into their own half.  The sustained pressure brought reward when Leanne McEntee pointed from 20 yards.  Cuala answered back with a point of their own and we prepared for a nip and tuck contest.  However Amy Kane had different ideas and with two interventions from the half forward line goaled twice to give Peregrines a substantial lead.  Daniele pointed from distance to increase the gap between the teams.  But Cuala weren't going to lie down and inspired by their rampaging midfielder they ate into Peregrines lead with a goal of their own to leave the halftime score

Naomh Peregrine 2-2 Cuala 1-1

The second half saw Cuala take control with the help of the breeze. Despite brilliant defending from Katie O'Reilly, Nkem Mwamba,Erika Elliot and the two Niamh Mangans, Cuala scored a couple of points to cut the gap.  Then disaster struck when an exceptional strike by the Cuala full forward gave our goalkeeper Lauren Beggs no chance as it rifled past her.

The team responded with Daniele, Lisa Sweeney and Amy Kane all coming close to scoring.  But some of our girls have played 4 and 5 matches over the last week and they just ran out of steam. In the end Cuala knocked oved a couple more points to seal the victory.

Naomh Peregrine 2-2  Cuala 2-7

Help Wanted

The Ladies Feile may be over but the boys is still to play on Saturday 5 May.  Naomh Peregrine are one of the host venues and this is a great opportunity to showcase the club and our facilities.  Like all such events it will require a lot of help to run smoothly so we are asking for volunteers to help out on the Friday and Saturday.  Even an hour on Saturday would be great.  Contact Dermot O'Hannigan if you wish to be involved (087 7647106)

Contributors Wanted

Do you go to matches?  Do you have a mobile with a camera?  Why not take pictures of the team and the action and send them to david.maguire@vodafone.com for inclusion in the Newsletter.  Or write a few lines to go along with the result and send them on.  It doesn't have to war and peace but your kids will love reading about and seeing themselves in the Newsletter and it lets the rest of the club know how it's going in your team.

If you know anybody who would like to receive the newsletter but currently isn't then send their email address to me at the above address.
